Latinx Ancestors Project
The perspectives of the LGBTQ+ community, particularly those who are immigrants and people of color, have been historically underreported. According to the GenForward Survey project at the University of Chicago, more than one in five Latinx millennials identifies as LGBTQ+, the highest of any ethnic group. Yet, GLAAD reports that 3% of the 698 characters in primetime Spanish-language media are LGBTQIA+. Latinx trans and gender non-comforming folks experience the highest rates of harassment, discrimination, and violence, juxtaposed by those who also experience xenophobia as reported by the National LGBTQ Task Force. Media and representation directly informs the experiences of LGBTQIA+ communities.
There is a direct connection between cultural storytelling as well as both public perception and policy change. ¡Presente! Media puts cultural organizing directly into practice, by ensuring that stories told by our community are used to push for true equity in resources, opportunities, and rights for Latinx, immigrant, and LGBTQ+ communities.
Through the Latinx Ancestors Project, ¡Presente! Media will produce a series of articles and a conversation about the LGBTQ+ Latinx community. The multimedia project will showcase important and timely stories from the Greater Philadelphia area. This project is supported by the Delaware Valley Legacy Fund.
