La Receta de Alma (Alma’s Recipe) directed by Gabriela Watson-Burkett — an award-winning Philadelphia-based filmmaker, producer, and multimedia journalist — follows Alma Romero’s routine as a health promoter for Puentes de Salud, a nonprofit offering medical care to the Latino and immigrant communities in Philadelphia.

Produced with ¡Presente! Media and commissioned by the Lenfest Institute of Journalism, the film takes the audience to South Philly’s Puebladelphia, an area that is home to many Mexican immigrants from Puebla, to watch Romero, a longtime community activist and popular restaurateur, in her service to her community.”

“By early 2020, Kristal Sotomayor had spent three years discussing the idea of creating a platform for indie filmmakers with Melissa Beatriz and Gabriela Watson Burkett, two peers with similar backgrounds in independent filmmaking. The result was ¡Presente! Media, a collective led by Latinx filmmakers and journalists with a commitment to social justice.

¡Presente! Media quickly went to work in producing written articles and videos on issues affecting the Latinx community and other communities of color. It has already received financial support from the likes of Independence Public Media Foundation, Bread and Roses Community Fund and the Delaware Valley Legacy Fund.”

Since Tuesday, the Lenfest Institute has been hosting an online summit dedicated to reimagining journalism in Philadelphia (the event continues today). Yesterday morning, ¡Presente! Media—a Philadelphia-based bilingual media collective—presented a documentary about three Philly locals, highlighting the ways in which media can either limit or support the roles that people play in their communities.

“It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.”
